About this indicator

What it measures
Year-ended inflation after removing the items with the most extreme price changes each quarter.
How it is calculated
Calculated by the ABS: each quarter, seasonally adjusted price changes are ranked, the 15% of the basket (by weight) with the largest rises and the 15% with the largest falls are dropped, and the rest are averaged. Year-ended rate as published in RBA table G1.
How to read it
The RBA watches this most closely to judge whether inflation is returning to the 2-3% target band.
Caveats
Which items are trimmed changes every quarter, so it is not a fixed "core" basket.
Frequency
Quarterly
Typical release
Quarterly with the CPI.
