About this indicator

What it measures
The year-ended change in the all-groups Consumer Price Index for the eight capital cities.
How it is calculated
Published by the ABS and the RBA (table G1) as the change from the same quarter a year earlier, not seasonally adjusted.
How to read it
The RBA aims to keep inflation between 2 and 3%, with a focus on the 2.5% midpoint.
Caveats
Headline CPI includes volatile items, such as fuel and fruit, and one-off effects such as government electricity rebates. See the trimmed mean for underlying inflation.
Frequency
Quarterly
Typical release
Quarterly, about four weeks after the quarter ends (late January, April, July and October).
