Every price on Take Profits is shown in the currency the instrument is listed in. A US stock is always in US dollars, an ASX stock in Australian dollars, a coin in US dollars, and a commodity in the unit its source publishes. That is the price the exchange or source reports, so it is never converted or replaced.
The "≈" amounts
When your currency differs from a listing's, a second, smaller line shows an approximation in your currency, for example "≈ A$354" under a US share price of 230.50 USD. Market capitalisation and fund net assets get the same line.
- The approximation uses the daily reference exchange rate stored for the forex pages (European Central Bank rates via Frankfurter). Hover over or focus the amount to see the rate and its date.
- It is not a quote. A broker or bank converts at its own rate, which includes its margin.
- Yields and index levels are not money amounts, so they have no "≈" line.
Your currency is also used for totals across instruments (such as a portfolio), for the example figures in the calculators, and as the starting currency for a new portfolio.
How your region is chosen
On your first visit we look up the country of your IP address in a database kept on our own server (IP geolocation by DB-IP). Only the country is used, and the IP address is not stored with it. If the database has no answer, the region in your browser's language setting is used, and failing that the United States and US dollars.
We remember the result in a small cookie named tp_locale. It holds the country, the currency, an optional time zone and whether you chose them. It contains no IP address or other identifier.
Countries whose currency has no daily reference rate are shown US dollars.
Changing it
Use Region and currency at the bottom of any page to choose a country, a different currency or a time zone, or set everything back to automatic. When you are signed in, the choice is saved to your account (under Profile and security on the account page) and follows you to other devices. It is included when you download your data.
The time zone is used by market hours. Leave it on "Your device's time zone" to follow the device.
