Trade journal
Write down the decision before you trade, record what actually happened, then review whether the plan or its execution let you down. Your journal is private to your account.
-
Before: the plan
The reason for the trade, what would prove it wrong (and the price that would show it), the planned entry and stop, up to four targets with the portion to exit at each, and the size. The journal works out the planned risk and the R-multiple of each target.
-
During: the fills
Each entry and exit with its date, price, quantity and fees, including partial exits and short trades. The journal works out realised profit or loss after fees, the R-multiple, the holding period, and whether each exit was at a target, at the stop, early or past the stop.
-
After: the review
What went to plan, the mistakes and the lessons, whether you followed the plan, and a rating. The review dashboard shows win rate, average win and loss, expectancy and profit factor, by setup tag, by month and by whether you followed the plan.
Measuring trades in R
R is the amount you planned to risk. If you plan to buy 100 shares at $50.00 with a stop at $48.00, the risk is $2.00 a share, or $200: that is 1R. Selling at $54.00 makes $400 before fees, which is 2R; being stopped out at $48.00 loses 1R.
Averaged over many trades, R shows whether your trading has had a positive expectancy, whatever the position sizes or currencies. Mixed currencies are kept apart in money totals and never converted.
