About this indicator

What it measures
The purchasing power of the consumer dollar, with 1982-84 = 100. A value of 30 means a dollar now buys what 30 cents bought in 1982-84.
How it is calculated
Published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the reciprocal of the CPI (not seasonally adjusted): 100 ÷ CPI × 100.
How to read it
The line falls whenever prices rise. Each 1% rise in prices lowers it by about 1%.
Caveats
It reflects average urban consumer prices, not any one household's spending, and says nothing about whether incomes kept pace.
Frequency
Monthly
Typical release
Monthly with the CPI.
