About this indicator
- What it measures
- The CPI excluding food and energy prices, which are volatile and often swing for reasons central banks cannot influence.
- How it is calculated
- Year-over-year change calculated from the seasonally adjusted CPI less food and energy: (index this month ÷ index twelve months earlier − 1) × 100.
- How to read it
- Core inflation is a better guide to where inflation is heading than the headline rate. When core is above headline, energy and food are holding inflation down, and the reverse.
- Caveats
- Excluding food and energy does not remove every volatile price, and food and energy still matter to household budgets.
- Frequency
- Monthly
- Typical release
- Released with the CPI, usually in the second week of the following month.
