About this indicator
- What it measures
- The change in the prices of a broad basket of goods and services bought by urban consumers, about 93% of the US population.
- How it is calculated
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Consumer Price Index as a seasonally adjusted index level. We calculate the inflation rate from it: (CPI this month ÷ CPI twelve months earlier − 1) × 100.
- How to read it
- A higher number means prices are rising faster. The Federal Reserve aims for 2% inflation, measured with the PCE price index, which usually runs a little below the CPI.
- Caveats
- Shelter is about a third of the index and is measured with rents, which react to market rents with a long lag. The October 2025 index was not published after the federal government shutdown, so that month is missing.
- Frequency
- Monthly
- Typical release
- Monthly, usually in the second week of the following month at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time.
