About this indicator

What it measures
The difference between the 5-year nominal Treasury yield and the 5-year inflation-protected (TIPS) yield.
How it is calculated
Calculated by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis: 5-year Treasury constant-maturity yield − 5-year TIPS constant-maturity yield.
How to read it
If inflation averaged this rate, nominal Treasuries and TIPS would return the same. A rise means investors want more compensation for expected inflation.
Caveats
It is market pricing, not a forecast: it includes an inflation risk premium and is distorted by the lower liquidity of TIPS, especially in market stress.

Typical release
