Calculators and market hours

How the trading calculators work out their results, what they assume, and where the market hours and holidays come from.

The calculators and market hours pages are free to use without an account.

Calculators

  • Your figures stay in the page address. Bookmark the page or use Copy link to these figures to come back to a calculation or share it. Nothing you type is stored unless you save a scenario.
  • Saved scenarios need a free account. They keep the figures under a name you choose; you can delete them at any time, and they are included in your account data export.
  • Fees are charged on the way in and again on the way out: a flat amount per trade, a percentage of the trade's value, or both. Currency conversion fees are charged on the value converted at entry and at exit.
  • Rounding. Share counts are rounded down, so a result never risks more than the amount you chose. Any budget left over is shown.
  • Exchange rates are the daily reference rates shown on the forex pages: mid-market rates published once each business day, not a rate you can deal at. Enter your broker's rate to use that instead.
  • Stops are not guaranteed. Every loss figure assumes the stop fills at its price. Prices can gap past a stop, and the loss is then larger.

Each calculator explains its formula under How this is calculated, and the Learn articles work through examples.

Market hours

  • Hours are each exchange's regular continuous trading hours from its published trading hours. Lunch breaks are shown for exchanges that have them; auctions and pre- and post-market sessions are described on each exchange's page.
  • Your time. Times are converted to your device's time zone, or one you choose, and daylight-saving changes in both places are taken into account.
  • Holidays and early closes are worked out from each exchange's published holiday rules for ASX, NYSE, Nasdaq, TSX, LSE, Euronext, Xetra, SIX, BME, Nasdaq Stockholm, the JSE and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. One-off closures announced at short notice are not included.
  • Published holiday lists. Holidays in Hong Kong, mainland China (Shanghai and Shenzhen), Korea, Taiwan, India, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi follow lunar or religious calendars or a government notice each year, so they can't be worked out in advance. For these exchanges we copy each year's dates from the exchange's own published list, and each exchange's page names the list and the date we checked it. A year the exchange hasn't published yet is shown as not yet published: on those days the page shows a scheduled trading day, not a promise that the exchange is open. We compare our lists with the published calendars each month.
  • Calendar export gives holidays and early closes to the end of next year as an .ics file, optionally with the next 30 days of trading sessions. Check the exchange's official calendar, linked on its page, before relying on a date.
