How market trends are calculated

What the sector, industry and theme returns on Market trends mean.

Market trends compares sectors, industries and selected themes over 1, 5 or 21 completed NYSE trading sessions.

  • Returns are equal-weight baskets of each group's current members, using provider-adjusted closing prices at both ends of the period. Members without both prices are left out and counted as unavailable.
  • The SPY comparison is the difference in percentage points from the SPY ETF over the same dates.
  • Breadth counts members that rose, fell or were flat.
  • Volume compares the last session with the previous 20 comparable sessions. It is not money flow.

Current members are not historical index constituents, and small theme baskets don't represent a whole industry. Sector names are an internal normalisation of the published classifications, not licensed GICS.

Lithium

The lithium theme is a basket of companies. Lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide prices are shown separately, as exchange benchmarks, with their grade, delivery point, unit and observation date.
