About this indicator

What it measures
The 30-day volatility of the S&P 500 index implied by the prices of S&P 500 options, in annualised percentage points.
How it is calculated
Calculated by Cboe from a range of S&P 500 option prices; this is the daily closing value.
How to read it
Readings around 12-20 are typical of calm markets; above 30 signals fear. A VIX of 20 implies the market is pricing moves of roughly 20 ÷ √12 ≈ 5.8% over a month, about two times in three.
Caveats
It is market pricing of expected volatility, including a premium for insurance, not a forecast of direction.
