About this indicator

What it measures
The yield on Moody's seasoned Baa-rated corporate bonds minus the 10-year Treasury yield.
How it is calculated
Calculated by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis from Moody's Baa yield and the 10-year Treasury constant-maturity yield.
How to read it
The spread widens when investors worry about defaults or want to hold safer assets, and narrows when credit conditions are easy. It has long history back to 1986, so recent readings can be compared with past recessions.
Caveats
The Baa index uses long-dated bonds, so its maturity does not exactly match the 10-year Treasury.
