About this indicator

What it measures
The percentage change in real (inflation-adjusted) GDP from the previous quarter, at a seasonally adjusted annual rate.
How it is calculated
Published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The quarterly change is compounded to an annual rate: ((GDP this quarter ÷ GDP last quarter)⁴ − 1) × 100.
How to read it
This is the headline US GDP number. Long-run trend growth is around 2%. Two negative quarters are often called a recession, but the US relies on the NBER's broader dating instead.
Caveats
Annualising magnifies quarterly noise: 0.5% growth in a quarter is reported as about 2%. The first (advance) estimate is revised in each of the next two months and in annual updates.
Frequency
Quarterly
Typical release
The advance estimate comes about four weeks after the quarter ends, revised a month and two months later.
