About this indicator

What it measures
The labour force as a percentage of the civilian non-institutional population aged 16 and over.
How it is calculated
From the Current Population Survey, seasonally adjusted.
How to read it
Participation rises when more people are drawn into work and falls with ageing and when discouraged workers stop looking.
Caveats
The long-run decline since 2000 is largely the population ageing, so compare with similar periods.
