About this indicator
- What it measures
- The change in the number of jobs on employer payrolls outside farming, from a survey of about 120,000 businesses and government agencies.
- How it is calculated
- Calculated by us from the seasonally adjusted level of total nonfarm employment: this month's level minus last month's.
- How to read it
- Steady gains show a growing economy. How many jobs are needed to keep unemployment stable depends on population growth and immigration.
- Caveats
- Each month is revised in the next two reports, and the whole series is benchmarked every year (with January data, published in February). Large swings, such as the 2020 pandemic losses, dominate the chart at long ranges.
- Frequency
- Monthly
- Typical release
- Monthly in the Employment Situation report, usually on the first Friday of the following month.
